Brake repair in your driveway
Brakes are the one system where waiting has a floor: past a certain point you are grinding metal on metal and the repair cost roughly doubles. The noises tell you where you are on that timeline.
What the noise means, in order of urgency
A high squeal when braking is the wear indicator doing its job and means book it soon. Grinding is metal on metal and means the pads are gone. A pulsing pedal points at warped rotors, and a soft or sinking pedal is a hydraulic problem that should stop you driving.
High-pitched squeal when you brake. Most pads carry a small metal tab designed to contact the rotor and make exactly this noise when the friction material gets low. It is a deliberate warning, and it means you have weeks, not months.
Grinding, a deep metallic scrape. The friction material is gone and the pad backing plate is cutting into the rotor. The job that would have been pads is now pads and rotors, and sometimes a caliper. Stop driving it beyond getting it somewhere safe.
Pulsing or vibration through the pedal. Rotors are not running true, usually from uneven deposits or heat distortion. It gets worse; it does not settle down.
Pulling to one side. A sticking caliper or a collapsed hose. Uneven braking is a handling problem before it is a wear problem.
Soft, spongy or sinking pedal. Air in the lines, a fluid leak, or a failing master cylinder. This is the one to stop for.
A squeal that appears after rain and clears in a few stops. Surface rust. Normal, and not a fault.
Why brakes in this county wear the way they do
Heat is the enemy of braking. Long descents, heavy loads and towing all put more energy into the brakes, and desert ambient temperatures leave less headroom to shed it, which accelerates pad wear and rotor distortion.
Braking converts motion into heat. Everything that makes it harder to get rid of that heat makes brakes wear faster.
Around Kingman, the specifics are grades and loads. US-93 climbs and descends. The runs out toward the lake and down into the valleys involve long descents where drivers ride the brakes rather than using a lower gear. Trucks towing trailers add mass, which is heat again.
The practical advice is old and still right: on a long descent, select a lower gear and let the engine do the work, rather than holding the pedal down for two miles. Brakes that get intermittent hard use with time to cool last far longer than brakes held lightly for an extended descent.
Dust plays a smaller part. Fine grit accelerates wear on pads and rotor faces, and it is not something you can avoid here.

Rotors can be reused if they are above the manufacturer's minimum thickness and running true. Below it, or if they are grooved or warped, they must be replaced. Most modern rotors are too thin to resurface, which is why replacement is now standard.
Every rotor has a minimum thickness cast into it. Below that figure it cannot shed heat safely and is not legal to return to service. A mechanic should measure it with a micrometer rather than eyeball it, and it is fair to ask what it measured.
Resurfacing used to be routine. Modern rotors are designed lighter and thinner, and there is frequently not enough material to machine and still clear the minimum. That is why replacement has become the default rather than a sales tactic.
Where the real choice lies is part quality. Cheap rotors from unknown suppliers warp early, especially in heat. Mid-range parts from a known manufacturer are worth the difference in this climate. Ask what brand is going on.
Two more things belong in the conversation. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point and produces a soft pedal under heavy use; a flush every couple of years is cheap insurance, and more so if you tow. And calipers that stick cause uneven wear, so a pad job on a vehicle with a sticking caliper will wear out early unless the caliper is addressed.
Doing brakes in a driveway
Brake work is well suited to mobile service: it needs jack stands, hand tools and a torque wrench, not a lift. What it does need is firm level ground, which is worth moving the vehicle for.
A front axle takes a competent mechanic somewhere between one and two hours. Both axles, an afternoon. There is no equipment involved that cannot ride in a truck.
What matters is the surface. Jack stands need firm, level ground. Loose gravel, soft dirt or a slope is unsafe, and a mechanic who works on one anyway is telling you something about his standards. A concrete driveway, a garage floor or a flat paved space is ideal.
Shade helps in summer, for the obvious reason, but safety comes first.
Two details worth confirming: that fasteners are torqued to specification rather than run up with an impact gun, and that vehicles with electronic parking brakes have the caliper pistons retracted with a scan tool rather than forced back. Forcing them damages the actuator, and that is an expensive mistake to make on someone else's vehicle.

When to stop driving
Stop for a pedal that sinks toward the floor, for any brake warning light with reduced braking, for a visible fluid leak at a wheel, or for grinding accompanied by a pull. Those are failures, not wear.
Worn brakes and failing brakes are different problems. Wear is predictable and gives warning. Failure does not.
Get it towed rather than driven if the pedal goes soft or travels further than usual, if there is a puddle of clear oily fluid near a wheel, if the brake warning light is on alongside poor braking, or if it pulls hard enough under braking to require correction at the wheel.
Squealing, mild pulsing and slightly longer stopping distances mean book it this week. They do not mean abandon the vehicle where it sits.
Brake fluid, moisture and the long descent
Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air over time, which lowers its boiling point. On a long descent, moisture in old fluid can boil and produce a pedal that goes to the floor exactly when you need it most.
This is the maintenance item people are least aware of and it is the one with the worst failure mode.
Brake fluid is hygroscopic: it pulls moisture out of the air through seals and hoses over months and years. Fresh fluid boils at a high temperature; fluid with a few per cent water in it boils far lower. Braking heats the fluid, and the only place that heat has to go is into the components around it.
The failure that follows is specific and frightening. Under sustained heavy braking, such as a long descent, the moisture in the fluid turns to vapour. Vapour compresses where liquid does not, so the pedal travels further and further, and eventually goes to the floor with very little braking. Let it cool and it works again, which is exactly why people dismiss it.
What to do about it. Flush the fluid every two to three years, and sooner if you tow or drive grades regularly. The job costs $100 to $200 and takes under an hour. Ask for the fluid's moisture content to be tested if you want evidence rather than a schedule.
And on the descent itself: select a lower gear and let the engine hold the vehicle back, rather than riding the pedal for two miles. Intermittent firm braking with time to cool is far kinder to the whole system than constant light pressure.
Electronic parking brakes, and why they need a scan tool
Many vehicles from roughly 2012 onward use an electric motor on the rear caliper instead of a cable. Those calipers must be retracted electronically before pads can be changed, and forcing them back mechanically damages the actuator.
This catches out home mechanics and the occasional careless professional, and the damage is expensive.
On a conventional caliper, the piston is simply pushed back into its bore to make room for new pads. On a caliper with an integrated electric parking brake, a small motor drives the piston, and it has to be commanded into service position with a scan tool first. Forcing it back strips the mechanism or damages the motor, and the repair is a new caliper.
The same tool is needed afterwards to bring the system out of service mode and recalibrate it, and until that is done the parking brake may not hold correctly.
What this means when you book. Ask whether the operator has a scan tool capable of retracting the electronic parking brake on your vehicle. It is a completely normal question and a competent mobile mechanic will answer it in one word. Someone who does not know what you are asking about should not be doing rear brakes on that vehicle.
The wider point: modern brakes are not a purely mechanical job any more. Sensors, wear indicators, stability control and parking brakes all interact, and the tool matters as much as the spanner.
