What to do when your car overheats in the desert
Overheating is the one fault where your next decision is worth more than the repair. Here is the order, and the reasoning behind each step.
What to do when a car overheats: the order, and why
1. Air conditioning off. The compressor loads the engine and the condenser sits in front of the radiator adding heat exactly where you need less of it.
2. Heater to full hot, fan on high. This feels absurd at 110°F and it works: the heater core is a second radiator, and running it moves real heat out of the engine and into the cabin. Open the windows and accept it.
3. Pull over as soon as it is safe, and switch off. Idling does not cool an engine that is already overheating, particularly if the fault is the fan or the pump.
4. Do not open the cap. A hot cooling system is pressurised, and opening it sprays coolant well above boiling point. Wait until the engine is cool to the touch, which takes longer than people expect.
5. Look underneath, from a safe distance. A puddle, a steam trail or a smell of sweet coolant tells a mechanic a lot before he arrives.

Modern engines use aluminium cylinder heads. Aluminium sheds heat well and distorts when severely overheated, and it does not return to shape.
The sequence is predictable: the head gasket loses its seal, combustion gases enter the coolant, coolant enters the cylinders. You get white exhaust smoke, coolant disappearing with no external leak, bubbling in the overflow tank, and eventually an engine that will not run.
Set the numbers side by side. A thermostat is $250 to $500. A hose is less. A water pump is $400 to $900. A head gasket typically runs $1,500 to $3,000 because of the labour involved, and a warped head means machining or replacement on top.
Which is why a tow at $150 is not a cost. It is the cheapest insurance available at that moment.
What was actually wrong
Thermostat stuck closed. Temperature climbs fast and early, often within minutes of starting.
Water pump. Often a whine or a growl first, or a weep of coolant from the drain hole.
Hose. Heat hardens rubber until it splits, usually near a clamp. Sudden coolant loss and a lot of steam.
Radiator. Debris damage, internal corrosion, or a cracked plastic end tank. Often a slow loss that shows up as regular topping up.
Cooling fan. Fine on the move, climbs in traffic or at idle. The same failure that makes the air conditioning go warm at a stoplight.
Low coolant with no visible leak. Either a very slow external leak, or a head gasket already letting coolant into a cylinder.
The desert-specific part
A cooling system is designed with margin for a worst case. In this county, ambient temperature is already using much of that margin before anything goes wrong.
The practical consequence is that faults which would stay hidden elsewhere become failures here, and they surface at the worst moment: on a grade, under load, in traffic, or while towing. Climbing out of Kingman on US-93 with a trailer on a July afternoon is the exact scenario a marginal system cannot survive.
It follows that inspection beats reaction. Hoses that have gone hard or glassy, a radiator face packed with dust, coolant that is old enough to have lost its corrosion inhibitors, and a fan that does not cut in reliably are all findable in twenty minutes in April.

Can I add water instead of coolant to get home? In an emergency, water is better than running with nothing, once the engine is cool. It has a lower boiling point and no corrosion protection, so it is a get-home measure and not a repair.
The gauge went up and came back down. Is it fine? No. That pattern often means a low coolant level, an air pocket, or a fan that is working intermittently. It is a warning with a delay on it.
How long does it take to cool enough to open the cap? Longer than you want. Thirty minutes minimum, and the honest answer is when the upper hose is cool to the touch.
Is a temperature gauge that sits slightly high a problem? It is worth investigating. Most vehicles hold a steady position once warm; a needle that has moved from where it always sat is telling you something.
