Why car batteries die so fast in Arizona heat

What heat actually does inside the case
A lead-acid battery is a chemical device, and chemical reactions accelerate with temperature. Inside a battery that is a problem, because the reactions that speed up include the ones that destroy it.
Two mechanisms dominate. Grid corrosion: the lead structures holding the active material degrade faster at high temperature, and that is permanent. Water loss: the electrolyte evaporates, exposing plate area and concentrating the acid, which corrodes further. In a sealed battery you cannot top it up.
Ambient temperature is only half the story. Under-bonnet temperatures run far above the air temperature outside, and a battery in an engine bay in a Kingman August is spending its days at temperatures that would be extreme anywhere else in the country.

A battery that has lost capacity over a summer can still start a warm engine. Cold changes both sides of that equation at once.
Cold thickens engine oil, so the starter has to work harder and draws more current. Cold also slows the chemical reaction inside the battery, so it delivers less. A battery at seventy per cent of its capacity manages a July start easily and fails on the first genuinely cold December morning, when Kingman's elevation gives you real cold snaps.
So the seasonal pattern people notice is real, and the cause they assign to it is wrong. The cold did not kill the battery. It revealed what heat had already done.

The industry figure of four to five years assumes a temperate climate. In sustained desert heat, two to three years is a realistic expectation, and a battery going into its fourth summer here is living on borrowed time.
The useful habit is a load test, not a voltage reading. Resting voltage is a poor predictor: a battery can read 12.4 volts and still collapse under the several hundred amps a starter pulls. A load test applies real current and watches what happens, takes ten minutes, and is the only test that answers the question.
Test at three years. Test again each year after. Replace on the test result rather than on a no-start, because a planned replacement happens in your driveway and an unplanned one happens somewhere inconvenient.
Things that make it worse, and things that help
Worse: short trips, which never fully recharge the battery, especially with the air conditioning running the whole time. Repeated jump-starts, because deep discharge damages a starting battery permanently. Corroded terminals, which add resistance and make a healthy battery behave like a dying one. Long periods parked, which is a real factor for second vehicles and seasonal residents.
Better: keeping terminals clean and tight. A battery tender on anything that sits for weeks. Choosing AGM construction, which tolerates heat better than flooded, if the vehicle supports it. Parking in shade where you can, which sounds trivial and is not. And on many newer vehicles, having the replacement registered to the charging system with a scan tool, because a charging system that thinks it still has the old battery will not charge the new one correctly.

Can a battery be ruined by one hot week? Not usually by itself. The damage is cumulative across seasons. What one hot week can do is finish off a battery that was already marginal.
Is a more expensive battery worth it here? Often yes, if the extra buys AGM construction or a better warranty. Heat tolerance is the specification that matters in this county.
My battery is fine but the car cranks slowly. What else could it be? Corroded cables, a poor ground strap, or a starter drawing more current than it should. Voltage drop testing finds all three, and people replace two good batteries before anyone does that test.
